​Five Questions with Sarah Banks

Sarah is a Marketing Specialist for the Hubbell Enterprise Marketing Division – responsible for CHANCE® Civil Construction (CHANCE helical piles).  Sarah works closely with Earth Anchoring Suppliers and all the CHANCE Distributors. She has recently launched or expanded many programs for CHANCE and their customers.  We wanted to check in with her and get an update from “the source”.

First, let’s find out a bit about you Sarah, what was your path to CHANCE Civil Construction and the world of helical piles?

• From helping my Dad with projects as a kid, to driving a forklift in my first job at our local food bank, I’ve always wanted to dive in and find out how things work… and then do it myself! It’s important to me to not just be able to market products with pretty pictures and pithy sayings but to really be able to understand how they work, what makes a product acceptable vs. excellent, and why the customer should care.

Can you give us a quick overview or list of the programs and outreach you have in play or in the queue right now?

• We are building on our Innovations in Piling webinar series. The fifth edition, coming up in a couple of weeks, focuses on square shaft vs. round shaft helical piles. Our engineering and sales teams have a wealth of experience and I do my best share their knowledge with others whether it’s through blogs, white papers, or literature. The webinars are very popular because our presenters make the information easy to understand and interesting to listen to. We get a lot of great questions and engagement and I’m looking forward to the next one. As for the rest of year, follow CHANCE Foundation Solutions social media accounts and you’ll be the first to know what’s next!

What presents the greatest challenge to you?

• Sometimes I feel very far-removed from our end customers. I would like to have more time to spend in the field and take part in some installations. Seeing first-hand what challenges come up and what is most important to installers and distributors would help me be able to shape our content and strategy more effectively. I think whether you’re an engineer or in sales or marketing, really taking time to understand your customers’ needs and preferences is crucial to doing your job well.      ​

Which one of your many North American distributors do you like working with the most? (Just kidding!)  What do you find the most rewarding about marketing and promoting CHANCE Civil Construction?

• You are trying to get me in trouble! CHANCE Civil Construction has an amazing network of distributors, and, no matter who your local distributor is, you can expect great service and support! As far as rewarding things about my job, I love tackling a big project – taking a leadership role, planning, organizing, creating content, executing, and analyzing. I find it very satisfying to work for months on a project and then receive positive feedback from our customers at the end. For about a year and a half, I worked with our engineering team to completely re-vamp the CHANCE University online training for installers. Now we have an easy-to-use online training program that is helping installers all over the world – and, bonus, I learned a LOT about helical piles in the process!

What are the challenges you’ve faced as a woman in becoming successful in your career? Any advice for women wanting to enter into your field?

• First of all, I have to give a shout-out to Hubbell for being a global leader in employee equality. We were just selected by Ethisphere as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. The company is active in Paradigm for Parity (addressing the gender gap in leadership roles) and is a top diversity employer at DiversityJobs.com. I work with and for a lot of great women and feel very supported at work.
• I’m not going to pretend that it’s easy to be a working Mom. Other than some time off  after my daughter was born and after my son was adopted, I’ve been doing the great    balancing act for nearly 13 years. There are some days when I simultaneously feel like a bad Mom and an unproductive employee, but I hope in the long run that I am teaching my kids that women can be intelligent, ambitious, and passionate about their careers, while still making time to shoot some hoops, help with homework, and cook dinner (or get carry-out!). ​
