EAS Field Training with QSC Construction at R Street
“Never leave your truck without a magnetic level & an impact gun!” - Kelly Milliner - EAS DELMARVA Territory Manager
by Chelsea Kiesling
The Project:
- EAS’ DELMARVA Territory Manager, Kelly Milliner, traveled to Washington D.C. to work with QSC Construction to field train their crew on installing CHANCE helical piles for their R Street project. The R Street New Construction project involved demolishing and removing an end unit of a section of row houses in the historic neighborhood Logan Circle. They had to carefully demolish and remove debris to ensure the preservation of surrounding properties. The crew had already removed debris and excavated down to the required depth for the first few piles before Kelly was on-site. Helical piles were required for this site due to the property being built on top of an old dump site. The soils contained various types of debris including well preserved beer bottles dating back to the 1850’s. This made for an interesting day of field training. The R Street project was designed for a 20-kip design axial load helical pile. Plans called for (33) RS2875.203 helical piles to be installed to a depth of ± 28 feet. Utilizing 7’ CHANCE RS2875.203 lead sections with a helix configuration of 10”, 12”, 14” with 7’ extensions, the crew would be able to meet the anticipated depth and torque easily. The Situation:
- Kelly arrived on site as the crew was just finishing removing soils for the helical piles to be installed. After introducing herself, she began walking them through their new Digga equipment. She explained how to properly interpret inline pressure gauges in order to fill in the pile logs. These pile logs are used to keep track of each pile’s depth, pressure, torque and any noteworthy remarks for future reference and certification. Once they were familiar with the equipment, Kelly had the crew open up the material and lay out a lead section and three extensions to meet the anticipated depth of 28-feet. She discussed how to quickly unbolt and bolt each section together to save valuable time. They continued to familiarize themselves with the materials and the protocol for setting up for installation before moving to the install area. The Solution:
- Kelly watched and lent a hand as the crew moved to their first installation spot and set up the material to begin install. They worked together to get the first lead section attached to the drive head. As the operator began installing Kelly showed them how to read the gauges, ensuring the pile met torque as it was installed. She also instructed them on common reasons piles don’t achieve torque and what to do in these situations. She stated “Since the site is on an old dump site you will most likely encounter large obstructions. If this happens, the pile location will have to be excavated to remove the obstruction”. As the crew began installing the first extension to meet the required depth and torque, they learned how the tooling made it easy to move to the next extension using the CHANCE Locking Dog System. As they installed the extensions, Kelly kept an eye on their procedure and offered tips to keep the crew moving and maximizing installation time. When asked what tips she can offer to new installers Kelly noted “Never leave your truck without a magnetic level and impact gun!” Once QSC finishes the install of helical piles, the new foundation will be poured and construction will begin on this single-family residence. As they complete the project, this beautiful home will stand at four-stories and will be the envy of the historic Logan Circle neighborhood. |
